Time For Tortorella To Stop Media Antics, Face The Questions

There is no questioning the fire of New York Rangers coach John Tortorella.  It is that fire that makes him entertaining in a number of his press conferences both in confrontation with reporters like Larry Brooks and many appreciate the blunt nature to which he will discuss a number of topics.  However, last night following the 2-0 loss to the Edmonton Oilers, Tortorella came out to fulfill his contractual obligation to meet with the media by stating off the bat that there will be no questions and calling out his team.

Tortorella’s statement via Steve Zipay (video here):
"This is going to be quick. I'm not taking any questions. We sucked from head to toe. And we need to move by it. So I'm not going to dissect it with you guys. I know you guys have to do your job, but I'm not answering any questions. Okay?"
Video of the "press conference" can be found

The blunt assessment of the team’s performance is something that all fans appreciate because there was no attempt to insult their intelligence by trying to make the effort seem like it fell just short.  Few will take umbrage with the assessment because of the honest nature of it and the obvious disgust in his tone/body language as he delivered.

The part that leads to some divide is the immediate dismissal of any questions which had split reactions across the fan base.  While the press conference that should have followed would have done nothing to change the results of the game that just completed and little to impact Monday’s game against Winnipeg, part of Tortorella’s job is to stand there and take questions from the media.    That is part of being a professional, which is exactly what Tortorella expects his player’s to be each time they step on the ice or have to answer for what went on there.

Tortorella loves to preach about accountability and taking responsibility for actions, but he dismisses the media’s ability to stand there and ask him questions about the product he helped facilitate putting on the ice.  Where is the accountability in that?  Why is he above standing there and being asked why Mike Rupp gets benched for taking an offensive zone penalty while Marian Gaborik doesn’t?  Is it inexcusable to him that he be asked why Gaborik and Richards were separated during the game?  Or any other question the media would have asked him for that matter?

He may view the media as a nuisance that he has to put up with as part of coaching the New York Rangers, and he might even be right, but that doesn’t make him shunning that part of the job description okay.   Following the loss to the Islanders I praised Tortorella for taking accountability for his coaching decision in regards to Brad Richards being left out at the end of the power play and leading to the Islanders winning goal.  There is no reason that his actions following the game last night should have been any different.

As I said, answering the questions, whatever they might have been, changes nothing about tonight’s game nor does it truly prepare for Winnipeg on Monday, but you can be both professional and accountable to answer the questions anyway.  Take the responsibility for where you screwed up and then move on to get better.

Video: Torotella Postgame "We're Not Disciplined Enough"

Coach John Tortorella met with the media following tonight's 4-2 loss to the Islanders and while he took some of the blame for the loss on himself he was not having any of the blame game on the officials or the schedule.  While some of the calls were lousy against the Rangers tonight, Tortorella is right that it is a discipline problem from his own team that has had them behind all season.

Video: Tortorella Calls Out Henrik Lundqvist Post-Game

Following a lackluster performance from his star goalie Rangers' coach John Tortorella was not afraid to "call a spade a spade" and call out Henrik Lundqvist for not being at the level the club needs him to be right now.
“Let’s call a spade a spade." Tortorella said. "Our goaltending hasn’t been there, certainly not at the level it needs to be this time of year. The Florida game we did everything but win it. The last game, too, prior to this one, we played well enough to win…We get five out of the six points if we get just decent goaltending.”

Video: Tortorella Snaps on Fan Incident Question, "Ask A Question About the Game, G-d D*mn It"

Coach John Tortorella followed the lead of his goaltender tonight when he snapped at the press when asked about a supposed incident between him and some fans behind the New York Rangers bench during the second period. As you can see in the video Torts fires back, "Ask a question about the game , god---- it."

Furthering the story Steve Zipay tweets, that as he walked away Tortorella said: "Bleepin clowns."

According to twitter accounts of the incident in question from @snowkitten35 and @the_nange the incident itself was no big deal in that a couple of Montreal fans were heckling Torts from behind the bench and he ignored it.  If anyone has other accounts of what went on or video of it feel free to send it over.

John Tortorella Coach of the Year?

avigerver
There is growing talk around the league commentary that New York Rangers coach John Tortorella should be a top candidate if not the winner of the Jack Adams Trophy for coach of the year.  I had been thinking about this for a little while and then when I heard Don LaGreca say it on Monday following the Mats Zuccarello interview on NHL Live I thought on it some more.  Today you have both Pierre LeBrun of ESPN and Kevin Allen of USA Today giving Torts the nod in their respective midseason awards reports.
The argument for Tortorella is a compelling one considering the expectations for the Rangers coming into the season, the massive number of injuries the team has suffered to key players and the number of young players either being mixed in as rookies or asked to take on key roles to be 6th in the Eastern Conference speaks volumes to the job that Tortorella has done.

Via Jesse Spector:

Love that Torts while asked about and justly praising Boyle, spoke up for how well Anisimov is going right now.

Video: Tortorella Meets The Media Talks Lines, Gabby, MDZ, Prospal, Drury, Prust

Video via Jesse Spector of the New York Daily News has some very interesting comments from Tortorella on a wide variety of topics.  Here is a bullet point of my takes after the video:

  • If you are to believe Torts then the theory that this is why Gaborik was playing so badly is debunked since he says clearly to start that it is a new thing for the last few days.  Maybe it is me but he sounded a little frustrated in talking about Gabby telling him he could not go in practice today.
  • Interesting he did not answer Andrew Gross direct question about whether the sitting of Del Zotto was purely about his illness which makes me think he might have been sat down anyway.
  • The relationship Torts has with Prospal is an interesting and unique one in that he can rib him in the media and fully expects Prospal not only to take it the right way, but use it as motivation to be even better the next time.  Wish there were more players with that kind of attitude and approach.
  • Statement that Drury will be on the wing contradicts the statement that he has not thought at all about lines
  • Love what he said to the inartful questions about Prust and wish he had the same approach to all players getting their opportunities because they earned them
  • Disdain for the Philly performance still very evident
Later tonight I will look at Gaborik's injury and what it might mean for tomorrow's lines against the Lightning.

Video: Tortorella Press Conference - "Prust Is Part of Our Core"

This press conference for Torts sets up tomorrow's story on Prust perfectly so thanks coach.

Video: Tortorella Postgame - Says Team Asleep; Defends Stepan; Calls Out Top Line

In his press conference after the game New York Rangers coach John Tortorella went through a wide range of issues after today's game.  Nothing in there that I can disagree with and you should check it out.

Video: Tortorella's 'Unacceptable' Profanity Laced Tirade After Isles Loss

In case anyone forgot why the Rangers have to show up tonight just remember this tirade from Tortorella in a similar scenario to right tonight being the first of a back-to-back with the Islanders in December.  Do not know how many remember how pitiful the effort was in that game, especially the first period, but it was painful to witness.  The changes Torts referenced in this conference ended up the benching of Ales Kotalik and Wade Redden with the team responding in a 5-2 trouncing.  Let us hope there is no reason for this kind of press conference tonight.

Video: Tortorella Calls Out Team Following Embarassment:, plus My Take

In the past I have been one of the toughest critics of John Tortorella's post game press conferences for the bluster and BS that he would use to sugarcoat the play or his refusal to call out some players when they clearly deserved it.  Since that was the case let me be the first to pat him on the back for this one as he was absolutely right in everything he said, the only thing I wish he added was about how Staal and Girardi were awful tonight and he himself failed to make any defensive adjusments.

Let's go through what he said:

    • There is nothing to build off when you do it after being spanked
    • A few guys have been carrying the team and they are tired now
    • St. Louis is as responsible for that PP as anyone
    • The guys who haven't carried need to step up
    • Called out Gaborik for not showing up
    • No situation with Henrik and team hung him out
In speculating on who he is talking about being tired I am going to start with Anisimov who has looked sluggish in a couple of the last games, Callahan did not have his usual energy tonight to name a few.  The obvious guys who need to step up but have not consistently as our best players are Gaborik who he named, Frolov, Del Zotto offensively, Staal more consistent defensively to name a few.

Video: Tortorella Press Conference - Nice Torts Disappears

Sam Rosen was doing his best to get the Larry Brooks treatment tonight from coach John Tortorella who has been much nicer in the media so far this season, but Tortorella was blunt though he bit his lip to not go off on Rosen repeatedly asking the same question even if in multiple formulations.  Tortorella had every right to be upset with his team's performance tonight and was probably generous in only saying that they were better in every position tonight because he could have been much more blunt about it.

Video: Tortorella Press Conference After Capitals Loss

Watching this press conference was painful because you can see the frustration in Tortorella but he is to a degree holding himself back this year and for whatever reason seemingly trying to be nicer with the media and more positive about the club. Definitely see the tug and pull of his personality in this one.

    Tortorella Post Game Press Conference

Talks about the effort, the defense, officiating. In general I am over the whole Torts and the media thing, but this seemed more genuine than a lot of the show he puts on for them most times.
